Musar is a moral-spiritual discipline, a system of character development, or soul-growth, that taps the well of Kabbalah and offers a framework and a toolkit for translating that ancient wisdom into a personalized, ongoing ethical discipline to improve ourselves and our world. This pragmatic and deeply personal study (and practice) of musar does a deep dive into the instructor’s own translation of a classical (16th Century) musar text called Orchot Tzaddiqim or “Pathways of Moral Leadership.” This winter’s session will study the chapter on the very first emotion mentioned in the Bible, bushah – often translated as ‘shame.’ Drawing upon the contemporary insights of Dr. Brown on this topic will offer us a fresh lens through which to understand various forms of self-conscious emotional discomfort [shame?] and harness it for good.
