White Fire: Reimagining Torah Through the Spaces Between the Words

There is an ancient Midrash which states that the Torah is written black fire on white fire. This course explores the “white fire” of Torah—the silent spaces between the black letters. The Kabbalists understood this to mean that there were words in the negative space to be uncovered and revealed. Through close reading of Torah text, participants will learn to enter these “absences” and create new narratives that illuminate timeless questions about human identity, consciousness, relationship, and spiritual development. Using the Adam and Eve narrative as our primary laboratory, participants will write their own “missing scripts” discovering how Torah becomes a mirror for our lives.
